Whitney's Wheelchair Van
I am a 36 year old newly single mother. Sadly, my husband could not handle me getting sick and being disabled. Now, my six year old daughter and I live with my parents.
About three years ago I began to develop symptoms of myasthenia Gravis, a rare neuromuscular autoimmune disorder. This is on top of my previous chronic diseases like EDS, POTS and narcolepsy.
After fighting medical gaslighting, wrong diagnoses and almost dying in the back of an ambulance, I traveled to Florida to see an expert in the condition and was finally diagnosed. The past two and a half years I have been in the hospital more than home.
I have had to be intubated ten times. I am finally showing some improvement but now have to use a power wheelchair to get around. The van we have is old and is very uncomfortable for my dad to drive. He is 65 and takes me to all my appointments. Some are nearly four hours away because I am so medically complex.
My daughter also had to go to a specialist nearly four hours away. Sometimes I don’t go because it’s too hard for my dad to drive the van that far. I would like to take her to Disney next year, but there is no way we could drive there with the current van. We really need something that is both reliable but also comfortable for my dad to drive.
